The #1 Thing You Can Do to Keep Your AC from Breaking Down

February 10, 2015

Want to make sure your air conditioner doesn’t break down? Sure you do.

There’s 1 thing that’s super important and super easy to do… but so few Florida homeowners actually do it:

Change your air filter!

Yes, it’s that simple. Here’s why ignoring your air filter can cause major problems.

A dirty air filter can freeze the evaporator coil

The evaporator coil is the part of your air conditioner that actually cools your home’s air.

A fan blows your home’s air over the cold evaporator coil, transferring heat from the air to the coil and thus making the air cooler.

However, a dirty air filter restricts the amount of air blowing over these coils, causing the coils to get extremely cold (since there isn’t enough airflow) and even freeze.

Frozen coils prevent your air conditioner from cooling properly, leading to the AC running constantly and/or your home being uncomfortably warm.

A dirty air filter can damage the blower

The blower (or fan) in your air conditioning system is the part that pulls in air through your return ducts and then circulates it throughout your home.

A dirty air filter makes it more difficult for your blower to pull in air through your ducts. Over time, this can cause the blower to run longer and harder than it needs to, wearing out parts prematurely.

A dirty air filter can shorten your AC’s lifespan

The quicker you put miles on your car; the shorter (in amount of time) the engine and other parts of your car will last. The same is true for your air conditioner — the more often you run it, the shorter its lifespan.

And the restricted airflow from a dirty air filter means your air conditioner must run longer and more often than it would need to if it were clean.

That means you won’t get as many years out of your AC as you might have.

So change it!

As you can see, dirty air filter can lead to repairs. But it can also cost you in higher energy bills.

So check your air filter every 30 days and change it when it looks dirty.
