8 Ways You Make Your Allergies Worse During Pollen Season

February 10, 2016

Pollen season is coming in Southwest Florida. And for many of us that means battling allergies for several weeks or months.

So the last thing you want to do is make the situation worse. Unfortunately, that’s what some people do. Here are 8 of the most common ways homeowners in Fort Myers, Naples, Port Charlotte and Southwest Florida make their allergies worse during pollen season.

Leaving windows open

We have pretty good weather year-round. But spring is especially great. So many people leave their windows open all day or open them at night to enjoy the weather.

Unfortunately, this also lets in the outdoor pollens. Keep your windows and doors shut during the pollen season if you suffer from allergies.

Keeping your shoes on inside your home

If you keep your windows closed, most of the pollen that makes its way into your home will be tracked in by either you or your pets (more on that below). You can reduce the pollen in your home by taking off your shoes outside of your home.

Not cleaning your pets before they come inside

Pollen sticks to pet hair. So if you have indoor-outdoor pets, brush them off and wipe off their paws before they track the pollen into your house.

Not washing your hair before bed

Your hair attracts pollen, also. If you don’t wash it out before bed, you’ll bring the pollen into your bed with you and make it difficult for you to sleep. Wash your hair after your last trip outside but before you go to bed.

Alternately, wear a hat that covers all your hair when you go outside.

Vacuuming without a HEPA filter

A HEPA filter catches extremely small particles. Make sure your vacuum has one.

Otherwise, you could be simply pulling pollen and other allergens out of the carpet and spreading them into your home’s air.

Emptying the vacuum indoors

Speaking of vacuums, make sure you empty them outside (especially the bagless kind). Emptying it inside can release allergens right back into your home’s air.

Skipping your AC maintenance

Over time, allergens like pollen and mold can build up on your AC’s indoor coils. Then, when the air conditioner kicks on, it spreads these pollutants back into your home. During an AC checkup, the coils are thoroughly cleaned to help prevent this.

Not changing your air filter

Your AC system’s air filter should be changed regularly. But don’t just rely on the cheap air filter that came with your system to filter your air.

A good whole-home air filter can remove as many as 99.98% of the pollutants in your home’s air.
