So if your air conditioner is 12 years old or more and in need of a significant repair, it’s worth considering replacing it since this could be the first of many repairs to come (see above).

Take a look at your utility bills over the last several years. Is this year’s significantly higher? That can be another sign your air conditioner is nearing the end of its usable life.

As an air conditioner ages, its parts wear out and can become less efficient (one of the reasons you should get an A/C tune up twice a year). This becomes especially pronounced in the last few years of an air conditioner's life.

Older air conditioners don’t keep you as comfortable as you’d like. If you have hot spots in your home or it feels like your air conditioner can’t quite keep your entire home cool enough, you might want to consider a new air conditioner

If you’re going to be in your home for a while and are concerned about keeping your monthly utility costs down in the long term, a new A/C is usually the way to go (especially if your air conditioner is older).

New systems are much more efficient than models manufactured just a few years ago.

Obviously, buying a new unit will cost you more than a repair. But can pay for them selves in the long run from the lower cost to use it.
